Semantic search maps meaning; Boolean search proves what is in (and out of) a defined query. For Ontario legal research, use semantic tools to scout related doctrines, then verify with reproducible Boolean strings and primary sources. Lawyers—not the model—remain responsible under the Law Society’s duty of competence when AI assists.
Legal research is judged by method, not by how polished the memo looks. In an era of AI-assisted search, that distinction matters more—not less.
Boolean logic (AND, OR, NOT, proximity) is deterministic: the same query returns the same hit set in the same database. Semantic search maps latent meaning: it can surface related concepts even when the exact keyword is missing. Both are useful. Neither replaces reading the case, statute, or secondary source you cite.
Barbarian Law® is a transactional firm in Aurora (York Region / GTA). Research quality shows up in commercial contracts, corporate deals, real estate closings, and wills—wherever authority has to be right for this jurisdiction. Semantic Search: Useful Scouting, Real Limits
Semantic search helps when you need a wide lens. A query about “contract repudiation,” for example, may surface neighbouring doctrines—frustration, anticipatory breach—even if those exact words are absent from a document.
The risk is the black box. A result can look right and still be wrong for Ontario—wrong court, wrong era, wrong statute, or another province’s doctrine dressed in similar language. Conceptual alignment is not jurisdictional authority before the Superior Court of Justice.
Use semantic tools to map the landscape. Do not treat ranking or “confidence” as proof.
AI Hallucinations and the Research Supply Chain
When a system is asked to produce a persuasive answer, it optimizes for output. Without verification, it may invent citations. The Law Society of Ontario has cautioned that AI tools can produce incorrect or misleading information and that lawyers remain responsible for verifying AI-assisted research before relying on it. The duty of competence does not transfer to the tool. (See LSO Rules of Professional Conduct, Rule 3.1-2, and LSO practice guidance on AI tools.)
On CanLII and similar primary databases, a hit traces to a decision, court, and date. An AI’s fluency is not a substitute for that lineage.
Boolean Precision: The Verification Layer
Boolean strings are the stress test. They support:
- Exhaustiveness within bounds — you define the universe; you are not wholly dependent on a relevance model’s filter
- Auditability — a partner, auditor, or future you can re-run the same query
- Hallucination resistance — fabrications that do not exist in the database do not appear as hits
Semantic exploration without Boolean (or equivalent primary-source) verification is incomplete process.
A Practical Bimodal Workflow
A defensible workflow integrates both:
- Explore — semantic search for conceptual mapping and missed synonyms
- Isolate — proximity and field limits to tie concept to candidate authorities
- Verify — Boolean (or structured database) queries for a reproducible audit
- Finalize — human review for Ontario applicability and strategic use
Diligence, not perfection, is the professional standard. A bimodal process is one way to make that diligence systematic.
Why This Matters for Clients
Clients hiring a York Region / GTA transactional firm are not buying a chatbot transcript. They are buying judgment applied to Ontario deals and documents—leases, APS files, shareholder agreements, estate plans. Tools can speed scouting; process protects the file.
Questions about a matter—not about search theory—belong at contact. Fee context: fees.
