How Fees Work Here

Barbarian Law® publishes its prices. Residential real estate purchases and sales start at $1,500, refinances at $1,250, a will is $750 and a power of attorney $450, notarization is $75 per document, and commercial and corporate work is billed hourly at $350–$395. Every figure is exclusive of HST and disbursements, no money is held in trust, and you are invoiced after the work is delivered.

Most firms will not tell you what something costs until you are already in the room. Every price on this page is published so you can read it before you call, and nothing begins until a written estimate is in your hands.

Two pricing models are used, and which one applies depends on whether the work can be scoped in advance.

The Two Models

Flat fee — work with a known shape

Where the steps are predictable from the outset, the price is fixed and published. You pay the figure listed, not a figure that grows with the file.

  • Residential purchases, sales, and refinances
  • Wills, mirror wills, and powers of attorney
  • Notarization, true copies, and commissioning
  • Standard incorporations
  • Independent legal advice

Hourly — work that cannot be scoped blind

A share purchase, a negotiated lease, or a shareholder dispute does not have a knowable length before anyone has seen the documents. Quoting a flat fee on those means padding the number to cover the worst case, and you pay for a risk that usually does not materialize.

  • Commercial and corporate transactions
  • Business purchases and sales
  • Contract drafting, review, and negotiation
  • Fractional general counsel work

A written estimate first

On hourly matters you receive a written estimate with a scope and a range before any work begins. If the scope changes, you hear about it before the hours are spent — not on the invoice.

No money in trust

No deposit and no retainer held against your file. You are invoiced after the work is delivered. The firm carries the risk of getting paid.

Specific engagements only

Every engagement is scoped to the matter in front of us. There are no evergreen retainers and no standing monthly draw, other than a small number of fractional general counsel arrangements agreed in writing.

Before You Read the Numbers
  • HST is extra. Every figure on this page is exclusive of HST.
  • Disbursements are extra and are not the firm's fee. Title searches, government registration charges, title insurance premiums, corporate search and filing fees, and courier costs are third-party amounts passed through at cost. On a real estate file these are itemized in your statement of adjustments.
  • Notarization is in person. Ontario's Notaries Act requires physical attendance for notarial acts, and the Law Society of Ontario confirmed on 26 February 2025 that online notary services are not permitted. Anyone advertising remote notarization in Ontario is describing something else.
  • Home, hospital, and on-site attendance carries a travel surcharge where a matter cannot be completed at the Aurora office or by video. The amount is stated in your estimate before the appointment is booked.
  • Real estate quotes are for standard transactions. Files involving new construction, estates, matrimonial transfers, private lenders, or multiple titles are quoted separately in writing.
  • Nothing here is a retainer agreement. Published prices are current and given in good faith, but the figure that governs your matter is the one in your written estimate.
Questions About Fees
How much does a lawyer cost in Ontario?

It depends on whether the work can be scoped in advance. At Barbarian Law®, predictable work is charged at a published flat fee — a residential purchase or sale from $1,500, a refinance from $1,250, a will $750, a power of attorney $450, notarization $75 per document, and independent legal advice $500. Work that cannot be scoped before the documents are seen is billed hourly: $350 for corporate, contract, and general counsel work, and $395 for commercial purchases of assets or sales of shares. All figures exclude HST and disbursements.

Do I have to pay a retainer or deposit up front?

No. Barbarian Law® holds no money in trust against your file — there is no deposit to get started and no retainer to top up. You receive a written fee estimate before work begins and are invoiced after the work is delivered. The firm carries the risk of getting paid.

Why is some legal work charged at a flat fee and some hourly?

Because a flat fee on unscoped work is a worse deal for the client, not a better one. Where the steps are predictable — a residential closing, a will, an incorporation — the price is fixed and published. Where they are not, such as a share purchase or a negotiated commercial lease, a flat quote has to be padded to cover the worst case, and most clients end up paying for a risk that never materializes. Hourly billing against a written estimate means you pay for the work actually done.

What is the difference between a specific retainer and an evergreen retainer?

A specific retainer is scoped to one defined matter: the engagement covers that matter, and it ends when the matter does. An evergreen retainer requires the client to keep a balance topped up in the firm's trust account on an ongoing basis. Barbarian Law® uses specific retainers only. There is no standing monthly draw, apart from a small number of fractional general counsel arrangements agreed in writing.

What are disbursements, and are they included in the legal fee?

Disbursements are third-party costs the firm pays on your behalf and passes through at cost — they are not part of the legal fee and are not a markup. They include title searches, government registration charges, title insurance premiums, corporate search and filing fees, and courier costs. On a real estate file every disbursement is itemized in your statement of adjustments, and on other matters they are set out in your written estimate.

Can I get a document notarized online in Ontario?

No. Ontario's Notaries Act requires physical attendance for notarial acts, and the Law Society of Ontario confirmed on 26 February 2025 that online notary services are not permitted in the province. Notarization at Barbarian Law® is in person only, at $75 per document. Note that commissioning an affidavit is a separate act from notarization and is governed by different rules — if you are unsure which one your document actually needs, ask before booking.

How much does a will cost in Ontario?

At Barbarian Law®, a will is $750 to draft and execute, and a power of attorney for property or personal care is $450. A $750 surcharge applies to home or hospital visits, where attendance cannot take place at the Aurora office. All figures exclude HST.

Will the final invoice match the estimate?

On flat-fee work, yes — the published figure is the figure. On hourly work, the written estimate sets out a scope and a range before any work begins, and if the scope changes you are told before the hours are spent rather than discovering it on the invoice. Published prices are given in good faith, but the figure that governs your matter is always the one in your written estimate.
